The name of the glass – Römer – translates from Germanic languages as ‘Roman’. It came into widespread use in everyday life at the beginning of the 16th century. It was used to drink Rheinwein, a local dry wine made from Riesling grapes grown in the Rhine Valley. The base of the Römer has a conical shape, wrapped in glass thread.
